A Community within a Community: Kenilworth Apartments

Historic charm and comfort meet at Kenilworth, a close-knit community nestled in Prairie Village, Kansas!

The well-known community opened its doors in 1964 as a prototype “community of tomorrow.” Kenilworth was built by Kansas City, Missouri developers JC Nichols & Co., builders who built most of Kansas City. They incorporated significant green spaces, complete with ponds and streams to create a park-like setting — all features that Kenilworth boasts. Kenilworth was intentionally designed with retail businesses at the front portion of the blocks that faced busier traffic. This was to keep the community quieter and more private. It also meant that no apartment was more than two short blocks to the clubhouse—easy walking distance!

Back in 1964, all the power, water, heating and cooling came from the basement of the Kenilworth clubhouse, with res idents only paying rent. This clubhouse was the embodiment of mid-century modern, as evidenced by their open design rife with clean, simple lines, deep wood tones throughout, ample windows, and colorful, ultra-modern furnishings. You can still admire the beautiful hand-carved Tiki-style doors! Kenilworth also offered two swimming pools, including one of the first indoor swimming pools in the area that residents could enjoy all year-round.

Now 57 years on, the historic charm of Kenilworth is ever present, while also integrating updated apartment and community amenity offerings! Inside these cozy homes, residents will enjoy brand new renovated upgrades including quartz countertops, designer finishes, and stainless-steel appliances, all with that mid-century modern feel that the community is known for. The hub of our community—the clubhouse—will also be getting a little polish with a fully renovated space complete with a fitness center, library, and wine bar.
