Honoring National Disability Employment Awareness Month this October
In the United States, October is recognized as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This month-long observance aims to raise awareness about disability employment issues and celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities.
According to the World Health Organization, about 15% of the world’s population lives with some form of disability. This means that nearly one billion people worldwide are part of the disabled community, and their voices and experiences should be heard and valued. This year’s theme for NDEAM is “Advancing Access & Equity”, celebrating 50 years of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
This year also marks the 75th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which began as a week-long observance in 1945 to raise awareness about employment issues for individuals with disabilities. It was expanded to a month-long event in 1988 by Congress to further promote disability inclusion and employment opportunities. NDEAM is coordinated by the Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). This agency works to promote policies and practices that increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. ODEP also offers resources and support to employers, disability organizations, and other stakeholders in an effort to advance disability inclusion in the workforce.
